Grey just nodded and looked out the window at the scenery rushing by. Caden knew this was the heart of his problem. He didn’t know who he was now—no longer a Curator but not an average human either—and he didn’t know who he’d been before, what his name was or where he grew up or if he loved or was loved or how he died. He had no identity, and he kept resisting any efforts to create one now. Jimmy had offered to use his former CIA contacts to generate everything Grey would need to be a legitimate American citizen—a social security number, passport, driver’s license, and even a credit history, all of which would stand up to intense scrutiny. Grey had repeatedly declined, usually with the excuse that he preferred living “off the grid” because of all the threats that were still lurking out there. Caden understood and appreciated what he was saying, but every time he said it, she heard evasiveness in his voice.
She wanted to reach out and touch him reassuringly, but she worried about what Dez may think of that. She was worried what Grey might think of that, too. Therein lay the complications that Caden had refused to think about earlier. Although he had never said so, she was pretty sure that Grey had developed feelings for her—maybe had them all along. She saw it in the way he glanced at her when he thought she wasn’t looking, the way he talked about her when he didn’t know she was around to hear, the way he reacted to Dez every time he kissed her or held her hand or put his arm around her. He tried to pass it off as if he were a protective older brother, but Caden thought there was more to it than that.
