“Jimmy, you really need to put the pot down,” she said.
“No, Caden, I really don’t,” he said, taking it out of the sink and banging it on the stove a few times to prove his point.
“Is this the part where you’re the adult?” Caden asked rhetorically.
That seemed to take a little bit of the wind out of his sails – she could see him physically deflate a bit. He took a few deep breaths and came around the kitchen island to sit next to her.
“Is this going to be a problem?” Caden asked gently.
He was quiet for a moment.
“I don’t know,” he said finally.
“Because I’m really starting to think that we need everyone on their A-game right about now,” she said. “I don’t think we have time for… banging pots on stoves.”
“I’m…” Jimmy started, then paused, seeming to look for the right word. “I think I’m a bit broken.”
Caden had a hard time not gasping as the shock of that. Less because of what he was saying but because of the fact that he said it all. Put simply, Jimmy Roth was a badass – a hooligan troublemaker in his youth that grew up to be a war hero and an “anything for the mission” spy. He wasn’t the type to show weakness, much less admit it, especially to her. After her father died and he took on the formal role of her parenting, Jimmy thought that he always had to be the rock, the dependable one who always had an answer or knew how to get one. He wasn’t afraid of anything.
He sounded afraid now. Sad and afraid.
